Salting

What is salting?

Salting is an HR term more likely to be encountered in the United States than in other countries and refers to a situation where an individual becomes an employee of a new company in order to organize a union therein. In other instances, this tactic may be referred to as entryism.

Salting is relatively unusual in modern business and when it does occur it’s usually because a company’s individuals are forbidden by law from talking to unions while a member of a workplace, and not also of a union. Thus, salting represents a legal loophole whereby a member of a union can gain employment, and then speak to their new colleagues about setting up a local chapter for their organization.
